The nameless girl does not know who or what she is. She does not even know her name. But she quickly learns that she has enemies who are trying to kill her, as well as lethal skills that no girl her age should know. And, she inadvertently discovers, she can also fly.

Her only clue to her identity is the mysterious, shape-changing ring on her finger that appears to be alive. And the one thing she knows for a certainty is that she must find out who she is before the monsters chasing her are able to hunt her down. DAUGHTER OF DANGER is the fourth book of MOTH & COBWEB, an astonishing new series about magical worlds of Day, Night, and Twilight by John C. Wright.

John C. Wright is one of the living grandmasters of science fiction and the author of THE GOLDEN AGE, AWAKE IN THE NIGHT LAND, and IRON CHAMBER OF MEMORY, to name just three of his exceptional books. He has been nominated for both the Nebula and Hugo Awards, and his novel SOMEWHITHER won the 2016 Dragon Award for Best Science Fiction Novel at Dragoncon.

Daughter of Danger The Dark Avenger Sidekick Book One Moth Cobweb 4 eBook John C Wright

This was a complete change of viewpoint in the Moth & Cobweb series. A mysterious young woman awakes with nothing, and sets out to recover her memory (and the lives and souls of her and her companion). Her path leads her through minor and major temptation, and into an encounter with great evil. Her physical quest combines with her moral quest - is she evil? Does she enjoy temptation and sin, or is she misled and foolish? Is some Entity attempting to reel her in? She resists long enough to find her master and mentor, The Dark Avenger, but their meeting and parting is not what she expected. I look forward to reading about how she will make amends and receive forgiveness from friends (old and new), her mentor, and her extremely extended and complicated family.

Along the way she encounters the Swan Knight, with a disappointing outcome. Perhaps there are family feuds and disagreements that need reconciliation among family branches and species. She encounters and receives blessings from a High Power, to the consternation of allies and master alike.

I will need to read at least twice more, to follow the convoluted warp and woof of this character series. Very enjoyable for an adult, also.

Daughter of Danger The Dark Avenger Sidekick Book One Moth Cobweb 4 eBook John C Wright Reviews

I didn't know where Wright was going with his "Moth and Cobweb" series, but now I think I have a clue Perpendicular. As in, still connected but shooting off 90 degrees.

With a new female protagonist, a new mystery, new discoveries and new challenges, Daughter of Danger has enough in common with books 1-3 to hook you in, and then goes on it's own storyline. If you're familiar with Wright's style of writing, you'll be pleased to know that he hasn't lost a single bit of talent. If you've never read any of Wright's writing, start with book 1 of the series, and buy them all, because you'll be turning pages until far past your bedtime.

Not that I've ever done that. At all. With this series. Nope.
Great fun. Another page turner from John C. Wright. I’m liking these Moth and Cobweb stories a lot. Characters well defined and quirky, fantastical scenes realistically described, and a story that grabs and doesn’t let go. Wild action? Hidden meanings? Allegories? You bet. Transports you into a world that’s based on ours, resembles it, but has ancient undercurrents of good vs. evil.
Wright has an economy of words that comes from lots of writing. He works in mythical and historical antecedents to our now culture that will have you pausing to reflect, but not for long. You’ll want to get to the next page.
The cover art hints at eroticism, as cover art will do. There’s none of that in the book.
Good, entertaining writing I call it.
Daughter of Danger, book 1 of the Dark Avenger’s Sidekick series and the fourth book in John C. Wright’s young adult Moth & Cobweb series, may be my favorite so far – but then again, I think whatever book in the series I was reading at the time was my favorite. A female ninja with Spider Man/Batman level powers and gadgets as well as a magic ring and a case of amnesia fights a city full of werewolves and sundry other evil eldritch creatures – with style! – as she seeks to discover who she is. Food, clothing, and a place to sleep would be nice as well. Short & sweet epic fun, first book of a trilogy, buy it and get on it!

The story opens with our heroine having a very Arthurian vision a lady in white appears to her, tells her that her life has been given back to her to serve the purposes of Heaven. She is relieved of all her prior oaths, and told that she is to save her beloved from falling into darkness. Then she is told to awaken, for those who would kill her are coming.

She awakens in a hospital bed in New York, IV in one arm, dressed only in a hospital gown, and wearing an invisible ring that smells like blood and which she cannot remove. She has no idea who she is or why she is in a hospital – she seems uninjured.

She tries to hide herself as three evil creatures – two werewolves and a huge satyr-like monster – enter the room. As they sniff her out from her hiding place, she remembers that she knows how to fight, and recalls specific instructions from the master who taught her on how a 100 lbs woman can defeat much larger opponents . In a epic battle, she escapes, kills the satyr, and discovers that the ring, properly used, allows her to float through the air, among other things. Her skimpy hospital gown is torn to tatters, so she finds a large American flag left out at night, and clothes herself with it.

Eventually, she rescues Elfine, a rather remarkable and indefatigable girl who is a Moth – a member of the Twilight people’s largest clan. She’s wildly magic and wildly out of control, but has a good heart and dream of becoming a detective, the nature of which profession she has only a very incomplete idea. She decides she need to help our heroine discover who she is, and to get her some clothes, some food and a place to sleep.

Adventures ensue. Epic battles and rescues and escapes. And mysteries that must be answered Who is our heroine, whom Elfine names Ami? Where did she get that ring? Who was her master? Who is her beloved whom she is to save? And why are all these ghouls trying to kill her?

Buy this book, read it, read it to your kids. Ami is a completely lovable and admirable character, Elfine is a gas – and Ruff makes a cameo! I’m starting City of Corpses, Book 2 of the Dark Avenger’s Sidekick and Book 5 of Moth & Cobweb tonight – got to see what happens next. Check it out!
Wright delivers the fourth Moth and Cobweb to much applause from his fans. For some reason, I had expected that each of the four sets of three would involve a different family Moth, Cobweb, Peaseblossom, and one other whose name escapes me at the moment. The families have been mentioned in the series as important within the story universe as residing in neither the Light or Darkness but instead in Twilight. So far, I am wrong as the title character in Daughter of Danger (we don't learn her name until the end as she is amnesiac) is a Moth like Gil in the Swan Knight set.

Where Swan Knight reveled in ceremony and tradition, Daughter is an action-packed romp with a young super-heroine. Yet, there is much to think about as the story progresses. GK Chesterton fans will smile at the names of the villains. I'm sure as the set unfolds with them, we'll see how their names are truly symbolic.

The story ends not quite with a cliffhanger, but at an excellent point with some threads neatly tied off to satisfaction but with enough remaining to leave you anxiously waiting for the next book.
